Malaysia’s Islamic party, Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS), has made a bold pledge to shut down the country’s only casino if it secures control of Pahang state, where the Genting Highlands casino is located. This proposal has sparked a nationwide debate, touching on religion, politics, and the economic impact of such a decision.
PAS’s Proposal to Shut Down Genting Casino
The Islamic party’s plan to close the Genting Highlands casino is based on its commitment to Islamic principles. Mr. Andansura Rabu, the party’s deputy commissioner for Pahang, has emphasized that gambling is harmful and inconsistent with Quranic teachings. He, however, acknowledged that any decision to close the casino would need to be handled within legal and constitutional frameworks.
“Gambling is harmful, so we have to close it. But it must be in accordance with the laws and Constitution. In Genting Highlands, the power might not be entirely ours. It could require a federal government decision, so we might not be able to shut it down,” said Rabu. The proposal has garnered mixed reactions. Supporters see it as a step towards moral governance, consistent with Islamic values. Meanwhile, critics raise concerns about the potential economic impact and the risks of political overreach.
Malaysia’s Casino Controversy
Gambling in Malaysia is strictly regulated, with the federal government holding significant control over casino operations. Historically, the government has maintained a cautious stance on gambling, balancing the economic benefits with social and religious concerns.
Genting Highlands, located in Pahang, is the site of Malaysia’s only casino. The casino has been a significant revenue source for the government, contributing as much as $1.5 billion annually before the pandemic. This substantial financial input complicates any efforts to close the facility.
Earlier in 2024, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim ruled out the possibility of establishing a second casino resort, reflecting the federal government’s cautious approach to expanding the gambling industry.
Economic Implications of Closing the Casino
The potential closure of the Genting casino could have far-reaching economic consequences for both Pahang state and the country as a whole. The casino’s substantial contribution to government revenue and the local economy raises questions about how the state would address the resulting financial shortfall.
As PAS moves forward with its campaign, the future of Malaysia’s only casino remains uncertain. Should the party succeed in taking control of Pahang, the battle over the casino’s fate will likely intensify, with both social and economic interests at stake.
